Lucia y el Sexo

Helen hosted on 4th April 2011; it’s worth mentioning at this point, that our beloved film club had started to turn into a dictatorship only because of the authoritarian approach of each host.  As such any future reference to Fascists should be taken with a huge pinch of salt, to those whose google searches brought you here for other reasons…

Well, fellows fascists, I’m sure you’ll agree that we experienced another triumphant MNFC last night, courtesy of the lovely Dr Payne. I personally was particuarly struck by the clever way in which dinner and her style of dictatorship were carefully chosen to reflect the film choice. Once again the hosting bar has been raised, piling the pressure on our next dictator.

lucia y el sexo

I think only Felix was missing last night, so for his benefit the film Helen chose was Lucia y el Sexo (Sex and Lucia), a Spanish film about the relationships of a young novelist with several women, and the consequences of these relationships and sexual encounters. As well as lots and lots of sex (!), the film also contained a lot of symbolism and spirituality. However, unlike Helen P, I don’t think this would convince me to watch it with my mum! The film sparked off some of the most animated discussion yet, with everybody having picked up on something different and significant that they had taken from the film.

Normally at this point I would direct you to the Wikipedia entry for the film, but for this one I’m afraid it doesn’t offer too much insight, and the Spanish page is even more sparse. I did pick up one interesting point from it though: ‘El director Julio Médem utiliza el sexo explícito para que el espectador tenga una visión más completa de los pensamientos de Lucía’. I believe it translates (very) roughly as ‘The director Julio Medem uses explicit sex scenes to allow the viewer a more complete vision of Lucia’s thoughts.’ Other/better Spanish speakers, please correct me. I don’t this was something we picked up on in our discussions last night, and you may disagree. I think Adam and Jon agreed that the sex provided Thematically Integral and Thought-provoking Scenes (T.I.T.S.) and that all films need more T.I.T.S.!

A Google search basically threw up lots of links to sites where people had helpfully uploaded all the naughty bits from the film! However, I found an interesting BBC article which talks about ‘the sun and moon joining the sea as forces shaping the characters’ lives’. The Rotten Tomatoes page for the film has a range of comments from viewers which you might like to compare with some of our own discussions last night.

The next MNFC is set for Monday 18th, and at the moment will be hosted by either John – if he can swap his shifts, Adam – if he has managed to resign, or Jess – if she has managed to purchase a big telly by then. I’m not sure how we can help the boys, but if we all send Jess a helpful suggestion of what sort of telly she should buy she might be able to get one in time. I’ll start the ball rolling with this.

Until next time, dear friends and fellow fascists.

Becca xx
